“We stand not at the verge that marks the interior and exterior of the labyrinth. Our many thresholds are of 'these' internal regions, yes, we are already here, have already, before memory, crossed irrevocably into ‘it’. Without an overview or final consolidated image, there is only the continually emergent.” - Wynona Marchuse
Investigations into potential alternatives to current curatorial methodology led five JHB based artists/curators to the formation of the Labyrinth project. First as a forum and space where this question of ‘alternatives’ is opened to the wider creative community of South Africa and also as a location where the results of these inquiries can find a form, and, a medium in which to exist.
The Labyrinth Project is an interdisciplinary platform that welcomes experiment, exception, spontaneity, impulse, de-formative action and revelatory play. The project, however also attempts some relation to- and understanding of- the compulsive behaviours of the current world context and the forces that coagulate around creative praxis. The project aims to draw out and transform the implicit relationships between exhibition and creation, between artwork, artist and viewer and hopes to create a rich resource for all those that harbour the creative impulse. The Labyrinth is, thus an exercise in relational aesthetics.
Currently situated on the second floor of the Ellis House artist’s building. The project has a number of exhibition spaces, presentation and workshop facilities and a dedicated audio-visual room. We are slowly developing these resources into a single site of continual creative flux, of artistic exchange and interdisciplinary experiment.
The project encourages artists, writers, curators, researchers in the larger sense, to collaborate in this process-oriented study and contribute to the emergent archive of inquiry that is the labyrinth project.
